Located in the pretty village of St Merryn, North Cornwall, this historic pet-friendly gastropub is now part of the Rick Stein family, and has kept all its village pub charm. Whilst your dog won’t find this in sniffing or chasing distance of the sea, like some of its sister venues in nearby Padstow, the views at The Cornish Arms will take your breath away – sit back and admire the stunning countryside, as well as the beautiful 15th Century church of St. Merryn. Come rain or come shine, you and fido will delight in the cosy comfort of the expansive beer garden or welcoming bar, as you chow down on the classic British fare.

Reservations are not taken, so just mosey down and pick a seat.

Food and Drink

At The Cornish Arms

With its white-washed walls and wooden-beamed interior, you can almost feel the history as you walk into The Cornish Arms – it’s cosy and welcoming atmosphere will make you feel like you’ve found a home-from-home. The Scandi-inspired log fires add a modern twist, and will keep you and your pooch warm in the winter months, while the expansive beer garden is the perfect place to while away a summer’s afternoon in the way only the Cornish know how.

The menu is perfectly British, with a few Asian twists – what we’ve all come to expect from Rick Stein. Tuck into a steak and ale pie, a basket of scampi with homemade tartar sauce, or a rich, dark lamb karahi. Don’t forget to leave room for some Cornish ice cream for dessert! Ales are sourced from St Austell’s Brewery (in the Southern part of the county), while the short but thoughtful wine selection provides the perfect accompaniment to the culinary delights.

The Cornish Arms doesn’t take bookings, so just grab a dog-friendly table when you arrive.

Doggy delights

Fido is welcome to join you in the two bar areas, and anywhere outside, just not in the main restaurant. Ask for a water bowl when you arrive to make sure your pooch stays hydrated while you try out a local ale or two.

By day

A short but sweet sandwich menu is available at lunchtimes, including delights such as rump steak, onion jam and Dijon mustard, and Davidstow cheddar, tomato and beetroot chutney.

From dusk

The evening menu is served daily from 5pm to 9pm, and all day until 8pm on Sundays.

The extra bits

Keep an eye out for their annual Beer & Mussel festival which takes place every March. 40 different beers and ciders are on offer, alongside entertainment across the weekend. You’ll be able to sample Rick’s favourite mussel recipes of course, from classic moules mariniére to Asian-inspired mussels with black bean, garlic and ginger. Dogs welcome too!

Just 10 minutes drive away, Padstow is oh so quintessentially Cornish – a stroll around the harbour on a sunny day will be sure to blow all your cobwebs away. You’ll also find some of Rick’s other dog-friendly venues, including places where you and fido can both rest your heads.

North Cornwall has an abundance of activities for you and your four-legged friend to enjoy together. For inspiration see our dog-friendly Cornwall destination page.

LOCATION AND CONTACT

Address: The Cornish Arms, Churchtown, St Merryn, Padstow, PL28 8ND

Hit the road

From the North, come off the A39 at the junction for the A389 and follow your SatNav around the beautiful Cornish countryside as you head towards the coast. As you approach St Merryn, The Cornish Arms will be on your right hand side – slow down a little so you can be sure you won’t miss the car park entrance. If coming from the South, why not exit the main road just south of Newquay and enjoy the picturesque journey along the coastal road.

What a great pub in a lovely spot. We, the family and our special friend (our dog), spent a great evening at The Cornish Arms. The food was excellent and the environment was warm and welcoming. The Cornish Arms team really looked after us all, including our fury friend. We will certainly be visiting again.

This is one of the ‘must go’ places with your dog to eat in North Cornwall; in a great location serving good local ales and wholesome food.

Lovely evening at The Cornish Arms. A real sun trap, it was doggy central and the food certainly didn’t disappoint. Lots of fish and some Asian influences. A great British pub!
