Rigby's Review

Forrest frolics

With thoughts of the countryside filling our minds (Rigby very much included!), we were soon in the car and on our way to Surrey. As we made our way through Guilford and the bustling villages beyond, we were soon on the lookout, keen to spot where our destination was hiding. We were soon to be in the know as we made a turn out of the hubbub and into the edges of Surrey Hills, where we shortly came across the leafy enclave encasing Barnett Hill Hotel.

With the tranquillity of the spot immediately striking us, a world away from the towns beyond, Rigby bounded from the car, eager for a roll around on the grass while we got our bearings. Proudly sitting at the heart of the grounds, the Queen Anne style mansion house was surrounded by a patchwork of converted red brick courtyard buildings, and gardens.

Rolling apparently complete, Rigby was ready to join us to say our hello’s. After a quick sniff test of the wellies, ready and waiting for a country walk in the entrance, we made our way to the reception. A warm welcome awaited us all as we checked-in and we were soon shown to our room in The Courtyard, while tips for the best walking routes where helpfully bestowed.

Ensconced in our room, Rigby immediately decided his bed was up to scratch and took to making himself at home while we settled in. With a cottage like feel both inside and out, our comfy room was snugly set on the ground floor of one of the converted stable buildings. Well equipped, with thoughtful touches throughout – our favourite, the special dog lead hook of course! – we were soon at home in the simply styled, modern space, brought to life with a flourish of crimson soft furnishings accenting the room.

Settled in, Rigby decided to leave the planning to us as we pursued the map, tea in hand.

All revived, we set off to explore the grounds. Rigby happily nosed his way through the formal garden spaces, with many a nook and cranny and hidden bench, perfect to enjoy on a warm day, before sniffing out one of the many paths to the woods beyond. A forest lover, Rigby could not contain his joy as he set off to explore the fern-lined paths below the towering trees. Lacking Rigby’s four-paw drive, we were glad of our walking shoes as we scaled the forest-claimed hillsides, that felt a world away from the bustling Surrey life, just a stone’s throw away.

After a thorough patrol of the grounds and with tired legs from the hilly paths, it was time for a siesta for the boys and a soak in the bath for me.

Rested and with the laid-back, friendly vibe of the hotel calling, we headed to the dog-friendly bar for dinner, where we were delighted to find a table reserved for us and Rigby. The understated space was warm and welcoming, from the friendly staff to the smattering of hotel guests enjoying pre-dinner drinks.

With a short but sweet menu of classic British fare, we opted for fish and chips and a Surrey Farm sirloin steak. Rigby meanwhile had found his spot of choice and was happily nestled between our chairs, bowl by his side, keeping an eye on all who passed by.

Our dinner was just what the doctor ordered, the steak, in particular, eliciting praise. Appetites whetted, we ordered the lemon tart and cheeses. The cheeses, more than generous in portion were a delight and the lemon tart thoroughly enjoyed. After a final chat to our hospitable waiter, we set off for an evening stroll through the gardens taking the long route back to our room, before we all settled down for a good nights sleep, all equally delighted with our comfy beds.

After a good nights sleep all round and morning constitutionals complete, we left Rigby slumbering, his belly full of kibble as we headed down for our own breakfast.

With a friendly waitress on hand to assist, we pursued the buffet, the cooked offerings standing out. Coffee and eggs were partaken of and we were soon back to Rigby, all keen for another country walk…

This friendly, peaceful spot, with its relaxed take on country living, is an easy place to be for both human and hound with woodlands sure to delight those with four-paws.
