Food and Drink

At Maze Grill, Royal Hospital Road

Whilst a little more intimate that its other Chelsea outpost, Park Walk, this stylish London restaurant is also inspired by the grill rooms of Manhattan. The contemporary decor, with plush banquettes, exposed brick work, warming wood influences and well-stocked bar is a place to soak up the borough’s well-heeled vibe.

Part of Gordon Ramsay’s Maze Grill group, speciality native and rare breed steaks are served along with those specially aged in the restaurants own Himalayan Salt Block cabinets, before being cooked to your liking on the Montague grill. A range of poultry and fish is also on offer, along with seasonal specials. Meanwhile, should you want a fresh bite, the raw bar delivers a selection of sushi and sashimi.

Doggy delights

Treats are on offer for your four-legged friend, perfect to distract fido from the tempting smells around.

By day

At weekends you are in for a treat. Partake in Sushi Saturday, from 12pm to 5pm. For £40 per person, enjoy bottomless bubbles and sushi, with an array of favourites from California rolls to tuna nigiri. On Sundays, stop by for one of their memorable beef Sunday roasts, available from noon until 6pm. Don’t forget to book and mention which you would like to join for.

From dusk

As dusk sets, make a reservation to enjoy a Woodblock special on Thursdays, with rare bread platters of sirloin, fillet and ribeye. A night out with the girls (or boys)? Try Wine Wednesday, where wine is on offer at retail price.

Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road

Rigby's Review - Guest starred by Marcel le Corgi

A-Maze-ing Grill

With Autumn in sight, we walked from Victoria station to the destination of our second Rigby Review. As we strolled along, Maze Grill Royal Hospital Road appeared. Nestled invitingly between two stores in a quiet residential area, the cute outdoor tables and large windows invite passers-by to peruse the menu, a mouth-watering combination of sushi and steak.

We walked in to be welcomed by the manager, Stefano, who picked us out a corner table with gorgeous upholstered benches to sink into. With menus speedily presented, Marcel was also soon in receipt of his own bowl of fresh water delivered with a fuss from the lovely waiter.

It’s easy to relax here, with the intimate interior featuring a delicate balance of leather, wood and brick, with walls adorned with photographs and snug alcoves downstairs for semi-private dining. To the diners (and dog’s) delight, discreetly located at the back there is also a large glass fronted fridge, showcasing an impressive array of rare breed beef pieces, aged on site and on which Marcel kept a very close eye.

With a short but sweet menu marrying American classics with British inspired dishes, our fellow diner was also delighted to discover the wide choice offered to vegetarians. We opted for starters to share: smashed avocado and sweet potato crisps, and the new to the menu, deliciously melting, truffle butterfish sashimi with jalapeno chilli and a light soy sauce, which came highly recommended by the manager and on which we have to agree! No wonder the first glasses of wine, a Chablis and a Ganacha, slipped down so swiftly.

With several salads and a pasta choice to pick from, our guest opted for shaved cauliflower with parmesan and toasted almonds. Deliciously creamy and with a satisfying crunch, it was tastily accompanied by a side of golden and crispy triple-cooked chips that didn’t disappoint. My 6-oz medium rare Wagyu artfully arrived pre-sliced on a wooden board, accompanied with mac and cheese. The most amazing piece of meat I have tasted to date, it certainly had Marcel’s nose prodding my knee, just to remind me of his presence of course, should I need a helping paw.

We rounded off our meal by sharing a delicious blackberry and brown sugar Eton mess, and a mousse-like chocolate cake with lime. Were the desserts necessary? Probably not. Were they worth it? Absolutely!

With no treats able to match the enticing beefy delights, staff smiled at guests cutting off a corner of their steak for their four pawed companions, and happily wrapped the bones to be taken home. Côte de boeuf, Marcel? With canines of all sizes more than welcome at Maze Grill, all humans and hounds can enjoy this dining delight but with some tables cosily close, those who like to spread their paws may feel a little snug.

Time flies when you are having fun and so all too soon we had to head home, the planned digestive stroll to Battersea Park forgotten.

With a simple and intimate ambiance and an eclectic menu, this hidden gem proves that there is more to Chelsea than the King’s Road.
