Food and Drink

At The Chequers

This is about celebrating much loved classics, such as Twice Baked Cheddar Soufflé, Bobby Battered Market Fish and unmissable steaks cooked to perfection in Josper ovens. Settle in and let this feel good gastropub fare envelop you – expect expertly-executed dishes with an occasional flourish, always made from the finest British ingredients.

Doggy delights

Welcoming throughout to paws large and small, find a cosy corner and a treat or two and your pup will adore sniffing out muddy post-walk boots and another wet nose or two. There are also maps at the bar with local walks for you both to enjoy as well as a delightful village green just across the road.

By day

Set menus are on offer at lunch, with two courses for just £12.50, or three courses for £15. On warmer days, pick a table in the garden and let fido enjoy the sunshine with a bowl of water and treat, while you delight in the not to be missed dishes.

On a Sunday, book a spot to enjoy the roast menu. Start with a Jersey oyster or two, before tucking into a wonderful roast such as Slow Roast Kelmscott Pork Shoulder with all the trimmings.

From dusk

Mingle with villagers supping a locally brewed beer, and those winding down with a Lucky Six cocktail, and let fido take in the atmosphere. Or perhaps peruse the extensive wine list, covering most regions but with a focus on France, or pick from one of the numerous gins on offer.

Then settle in with family or friends and enjoy the Classics menu, which is updated seasonally and should not disappoint.

The extra bits

There is an outside area for fido to stretch his legs, or sit outside in the flower adorned courtyard on warmer days.

Children’s menus are available on request.

There is a private room available to book, which can accommodate up to 12 guests. For a small group, ask for the table for 4 on a balcony overlooking the restaurant.

Rigby's Review

Charming Chequers

On a sweltering summer’s day, Rigby and I took a drive along the hedge row-lined country lanes of the North Cotswolds to the charming village of Churchill. Our destination? The Chequers. Perfectly positioned in the centre of the village, and with a spacious green across the road – to which Rigby insisted we adjourn immediately for a paw-stretch and sniff pre-lunch – this modern gastropub was a welcoming sight.

Barely a paw in the door, Rigby was greeted with a welcoming hand, and we were faced with the difficult decision of which of the delightful areas in which to take a pew. We chose from the charming newly installed and climber-lined back courtyard, the atmospheric bar and, our choice, the blue-hued dining area – picked for its cooling breeze out of the heat of the sun – a rare problem on these fair isles!

While Rigby sought out the perfect spot under the banquettes to hide away and relish the cool air, a bowl full of icy cold water was swiftly delivered for him to lap up. With a basket of warm bread and salted butter delivered while we perused the chequerboard menu, we settled in to this most welcoming of gastropubs. Characterfully decorated with wonderful chunky oak tables, it was time for the difficult task…what to have. It’s a well thought out menu, with something for all – whether a light bite, wholesome dinner or charming British classic brought right up to date. While my interest peaked with the inventive Ploughman’s Box, with Scottish Isle of Mull cheddar my cheese of choice, my dining companion (of the human kind!) selected Poached Smoked Haddock served with spinach, poached eggs and hollandaise, and the ubiquitous, tasty (and firm favourite of the Paws’ team) sweet potato fries.

The simple savouring of fine ingredients is what excels here, and even my Ploughman’s Box came beautifully presented, with the perfect sausage roll, scotch egg, meats, cheese and accompaniments, with Rigby’s nose a-twitching for a taste of the ham-hock terrine. Food at The Chequers does not disappoint; it’s about good food, to be enjoyed among friends.

With a little room and an extremely tempting dessert menu, a Sticky Toffee Pudding with vanilla ice cream was ordered along with a tangy lemon sorbet for the more virtuous of us – perfect to refresh on a summer’s day. That said, even the pudding (as wintery as its reputation may be) was light and fluffy, and not a spot remained.

Awakening from his post-treat slumber (only due to the suggestion that a walk in the fields, a short stroll away, was on offer), Rigby reluctantly rose from his contented snooze to take an amble with us through the village.

This charming gastropub is a delight. Whether a local or a visitor, it is more than worthy of a pawstop.
