A favourite of Paws Team spaniel Rigby, the dog-friendly Helford Passage is a blissful way to spend a sunny day in Cornwall. Its old world charm and unspoiled banks will have you settling in for more than an hour or two, and fido will love the gentle waters in this tranquil inlet.

The low down

The Helford Passage, nestled along the Helford River in South Cornwall, inspired Daphne du Maurier to write Frenchman’s Creek, after she spent her honeymoon here.

The Ferryboat Inn at the passage’s heart serves up tasty gastropub fare, and dogs are welcomed with open arms. The terrace at The Ferryboat Inn overlooks the sand and shingle beach lining the passage, where families play, dogs frolic and traditional wooden huts serve a variety of seaside treats.

After a drink, or more, at the Ferryboat, a walk east along the dog-friendly Helford passage is more than worthwhile and takes you to a charming dog-friendly swimming spot. After a short country lane you will find yourself on another beach, so quiet you may well have it to yourself (and your pup of course!). Your dog will adore the tranquil waters. Without big waves found on the seaside elsewhere to send them flying, your pooch will be able to paddle galore while you take in the view. Pick up a floating toy from one of the seaside huts in the passage to really tire your pooch out as they play in the waters.

  • A day out with fido
  • Old English charm, be ready to paddle
  • Dine with fido at The Ferryboat Inn
  • Use the pay and display car park on your approach
  • For seafaring hounds, take the ferry from Helford Village

Where We Are

If you still have a little energy, and are able to drag yourself away from the idyllic spot, take the short drive (or even walk) to sub-tropical Trebah Garden, where dogs are welcome in the garden as well as on the beach, year round. There are also designated doggie tables in Trebah Kitchen. For inspiration see our dog-friendly Cornwall destination page.

For other dog-friendly venues in the area, check out our ‘Also in the Neighbourhood’ recommendations below.

Hit the road

In south Cornwall, on the north bank of the Helford River that lies south of Falmouth, this small bay, filled with charm, is accessible via a small car park a few hundred feet from the passage. Just follow the SatNav and enjoy the winding country roads.

All aboard

Why not turn the journey into an adventure, and get a ferry across the river from Helford Village.
