Energetic pooches will love the wide-open spaces of Putney Lower Common. The broad, sprawling meadows are the perfect place to burn off some energy with a game of fetch. Just keep your pup away from the cricket green – cricket balls aren’t ideal for pup’s mouth, and we doubt the local cricketers would thank the interruption!
Even while giving the sports ground a wide berth, there’s plenty of space to explore, with beautifully green meadows that blossom with a carpet of cow parsley in the Spring and a riverside walk beside the mighty Thames to the North of the common.
Wild-loving dogs should head for the less manicured space of Putney Heath. This thriving heathland is a countryside paradise, interspersed with clumps of trees that make ideal sniff spots for pup, leading into more dense woodland to the North.
If you’re spending the day on the Common, don’t forget to pack up a picnic and head towards the Heath to find The Frying Pan, a beautifully nature-filled glade that’s a popular spot for grabbing a bite.
Like nearby Wimbledon Common, Putney Common is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation, so keep your eyes peeled to spot native flora and fauna, including badgers, rabbits and even the rare Dartford Warbler.
